Chia is the edible seed of Salvia Hispanica, a flowering plant in the mint family that is native to Central America.
What are the benefits of chia seeds??
Chia seeds are of benefit nutritionally because they are a good source of omega 3 fatty acids, antioxidants whilst also providing fibre, iron and calcium. The fibre in chia seeds can help to keep you fuller for longer and therefore can help if you are looking to reduce your weight. The ratio of fibre, proteins and fats combined with the fact that these are low-carb seeds means that they are great for helping to stabilise your blood sugar levels too.
How do you prepare chia seeds?
Chia seeds do not need to be soaked before use, but doing so can help to maximise their nutritional benefits. They do not need to be cooked and can be added whole or ground to smoothies, juices, yoghurts or oatmeal.
When eaten without pre-soaking chia seeds are quite similar in texture to poppy seeds. If you soak them they will become plump, sweet and soft rather like tapioca pearls - they can be used in a similar way too if so desired.
